How can I improve my singing?

Okay so I've decided that in a few years if American Idol is still around I want to try out and I've been told I have a nice singing voice by my parents and friends and it seems like they completely support this decision but I only have 1 problem...I can't sing a'cappella....yeah so how can I improve my singing w/o getting lessons??
